貔貅 (Pí Xiū)

Posted by on Oct 14, 2006 in Blog | 0 comments

Since last month, I have welcomed a strange beast in my home. Sara, who brought it to me told me that it was a Pi Xiu (貔貅, or Tian Lu 天祿), one of the nine progenies of the dragon.

It is said to be very auspicious, much able to ward off bad luck (for people born in the year of the Sheep, it is supposed to be useful), and to pile up richness, as it not only craves gold, but it also cannot expel it, due to a celestial punishment.

Hence the replete tummy, full of treasures.

When I think of all the effort put in the last advertising campaign by publicists to make millions of people play lottery this Friday 13 th, I am simply in awe of Chinese people for having imagined such an evocative symbol of luck.

Incidentally, I would have loved to see faces of people in front of an advertisement “Today is the day of luck” full of red, with obese people or a creature that seems to come out of a horror movie.

All in all, I love this Pi Xiu :)
