Sometimes there can be a huge difference from what the pictures look like on different monitors, and though most of recent monitors do a fair job at rendering accurately the colors, some checking and tweaking may still be needed at times.

The grid below should help you say when your monitor could use some adjustment. To check whether your monitor is properly calibrated, you should be able to pick out every shade of grey (especially the area around 90% ~ 100%).

If this is not the case (for instance the areas above 80% appear all the same black), you would need to adjust the contrast and/or gamma of your monitor…

100% 90% 80% 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 0%

One of the ways to do this would be first to put the contrast to the maximum, then adjust the levels of grays with the gamma setting.

This can be done with your monitor (hardware) but also with some softwares (like Adobe’s).
