Eerie World

I always loved «spoiled» cakes. One would say that I am not so picky. I would rather say that most of the time there is nothing fundamentaly bad in a spoiled cake, but its not so presentable aspect.

In a way, all the ingredients are present, it is just that there was this little something that lacked to make it as much a pleasure for the eye as it is to the palate.

Of couse, beyond the clichéd metaphor, it comes to the point that I like to see things for the potential of transformation that they represent.

This is particularly true for doodles, sketches or drawings that I make, never truly finished in a way. As much as dreams, they continue their own evolution when we are through with them.

The state of potential foreseen by the artist is his very Ariadne’s thread, the vision that carry him and animates the work. But this vision does not always come as granted, and this small example shows that it exists somehow if we look for it without prejudice.

The following story begins a rainy Tuesday night of March 2005, only to find a state of completion… amusingly enough, nine months later.

To Magali who wondered about this odd device, I showed her how to work with the graphic tablet and begin to draw some lines on an empty canvas.

As she is surprised about my automatic saving of the doodle, I laugh and reply that I might well be developing it later (it since became a cockatoo).

Next, I put her in front of an empty canvas and help her to draw some lines, then I let her enjoy on her own. A bit frustrated by her clumsiness to manipulate the tablet (remember your first steps with that other strange device named mouse) she is about to close everything, but I save the doodle, as it might be a fun challenge to get to make something coherent with it.

Nine months after, inspiration seems to come back to help me complete the picture, without losing completely the given blueprints, odd as they might be.

Below, the initial image (left), and the final one (right).

Here it is also, as a quick step-by-step animation so that it gives a rough idea of the realization process.

And what is fascinating, is that another person might have handled the same initial pic in a totally different way and end up with something as coherent, but different.

A beautiful image of what we are doing of our lives, isn’t it ?

“another person might have handled the same initial pic in a totally different way and end up with something as coherent, but different”喜欢这句话。

    Nice comment ;)
I would say that, to 改 or not to 改得到, is not the whole question… it is how you do it.
Changes are incremental (更上一层楼), sometimes barely discernable, and 到 (destination) is not what is the most important, though it seems so.

I daresay that the 道 (way) is more important :)

呵呵,从量变到质变(accumulation of quantities makes change in quality,瞎翻翻;)

All is well that ends well.
